FAQ

GRAIN FREE - why?

A dog's saliva is virtually amylase-free (an enzyme used to break down starchy carbohydrates prior to reaching the stomach) so they find carbohydrates much harder to digest. Therefore our foods have been created WITHOUT grain (a source of carbohydrates). Our food is therefore much easier to digest. This also means that less is required in each serving which, in turn, means less cost per serving and therefore of course less stools.

BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE – what does this mean?

As we all know, dogs are carnivores but over the years the foods that have been developed have moved further and further away from their natural diet and what they require in order to be healthy. Many of the foods developed have been composed to be 'cheap' and, to this end, have erratic sources of protein and other vital ingredients.  The entire concept of biologically appropriate is to mimic what our dogs would look for in the wild.

At Skylos we have really looked at what our dogs NEED – going back to before these compromised foods were available. We believe we have created recipes much more akin to a dog’s requirements – with a high fresh meat content and a better balance of protein and other crucial ingredients.

Are the Skylos Foods recipes HYPOALLERGENIC?

Yes. We have developed foods to avoid those ingredients that are known to most commonly cause allergic reactions – such as wheat and dairy.

ARTIFICIAL ADDITIVES – does Skylos Foods add any?

No. We absolutely believe there is no benefit in including artificial additives to foods when natural alternatives are available to us.

Preservatives: our foods are preserved naturally with mixed tocopherols (vitamin E).

Flavourings: our foods are so tasty that we do not need to add artificial flavours. Our taste tests have been carried out on the most discerning and fussiest dogs – all devoured the food.

Colourings:  There is no benefit to the end consumer in these being added so why would we. Colourings are purely added to make a brand stand out.

Does Skylos Foods use BOTANICALS and what are they?

Botanicals are a plant or part of a plant with medicinal or therapeutic benefits. Some have been included within our foods to mimic the natural diets of dogs.

MEAT AND ANIMAL DERIVATIVES. Does Skylos Foods include these?

We do not include meat and animal derivatives in our recipes as we do not believe that these are a good ingredient for dogs’ diets. They are incorporated in some brands as they prove cheaper in manufacturing terms.

GENETICALLY MODIFIED INGREDIENTS. Does Skylos Foods contain these?

No. Our feeds do not contain any genetically modified ingredients (GMOs).

Why do all of Skylos Foods' recipes incorporate SWEET POTATO?

Sweet potato is a healthy alternative to potato and provides more nutritional value. It is a rich source of beta-carotene. A powerful antioxidant converts to vitamin A in a dog’s body and is thought to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer and provide protection against heart disease. It is also a good source of potassium, manganese and magnesium. They also contain calcium, iron and zinc but are low in sodium.   Minerals serve many vital purposes in your dog’s body and are necessary for good health. For example – potassium is needed to maintain a correct fluid balance in the body, as well as preserving nerve transmissions and muscle function. Sweet potatoes are high in dietary fibre – great for digestive health. They contain very little fat.

Importantly sweet potato has a low GI (glycemic index), which releases energy at a slow/steady rate. As with humans, GI diets have huge benefits for weight control.

From where do you source your INGREDIENTS?

All of Skylos' ingredients are UK sourced.

Do I need to feed my dog anything else in addition to Skylos?

Absolutely not, Skylos is a complete feed and provides everything your dog needs in its daily diet.

Do you make PUPPY FOOD?

Yes, we do.  We believe that puppies should be started off as you mean to go on and that means with a clean and healthy diet, which is sympathetic to their growing digestive systems.  Our puppy foods contain a blend of high quality proteins and vegetables to provide balance and an introduction to some really nutritious ingredients.  Rich in amino acids for growth and development.  Glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate and MSM to help with bone and cartilage development in their fastest growth phase.

How many times a day should I feed my PUPPY?

At around eight to 12 weeks of age your puppy is probably eating three to four times a day.  We would recommend that, over time and by six months of age, he/she is down to two meals a day and this schedule then continues through their life.

HOW MUCH should I feed my dog?

Feeding guidelines are available on all bags - these are only a recommendation and should be increased/decreased dependent on dog(s) activity levels and age.

At what age should I consider transferring my dog onto a 'SENIOR' food?

It is thought that dogs progress to being 'senior' from about 7-8 years of age.  More mature dogs have different nutritional needs. Skylos Senior has been formulated with this in mind and contains glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate and MSM to promote joint repair and mobility, oils to support cognitive function, visual development and help reduce inflammatory response - especially important for joints.
